Whispering Wishes, 2011, realtime twitter visualization, sk telecom building, 아트센터 나비

이 작품은 2가지 방식으로 작동되는데, 첫번째는 twitter에서 '새해소원' 이 들어간 문장을 추출하여 보여주는 방식과

두번째 twitter의 @comostory계정으로 보낸 새해소원을 실시간으로 보여주는 것이다.

그 사람의 마음의 상태를 아는 것이 그 사람을 이해하는 가장 좋은 방법일 것이다.

우리는 어떻게 다른 사람들의 생각을 읽을까? 보통은 누군가가 했던 말의 의미를 파악함으로써 그들의 의도를 읽어낸다. 블로그나 많은 사이트에 떠돌아다니는 글들이 얼마나 진실성을 담고 있는 지는 의심해 볼 여지가 있지만, 폭발적인 소설 네트워크 활용은 소통과 관계에 대한 욕구의 반영일 것이다.

이번에 트위터를 이용한 작업(data visualization)은 소설 네트워크, 공공 예술 등의 거대담론이 아닌 그냥 일반 사람들의 이야기를 통해 그 사람들의 마음을 들여다 보고자 하는 의도에서 시작되었다. 다른 사람의 관념을 바꾸기 위한 프로파간다로서의 예술이 아닌 그냥 타인의 말을 들어봄으로써 그들을 조금 이해할 수 있도록 말이다. 내가 트위터에 보낸 질문은 ‘새해소원’ 이다. 새해가 밝으면 모든 사람들은 그들의 가장 간절한 마음을 담아서 소원을 빈다. 그들의 바람이 도시의 전광판을 통해 전해질 때 타인에 대한 이해 역시 높아질 수 있기를 바란다.

How do we read other people’s minds? Intentions are usually read by comprehending the meaning of what people say. Although the authenticity of the writings on blogs and various sites should be questioned, the explosive application of social networks must be a reflection of the need for communication and relationships.

This data visualization using Twitter did not begin with a big discussion on social networks, public art etc., but simply with the intention of peeking into the minds of people through their stories; not as a propagandist art that aims to change the ideas of others, but to understand the people a bit more by listening to the words of others. The question I send on Twitter is ‘New Year’s Resolution’. When the New Year dawns, everyone gathers their most earnest desires and makes wishes.

I hope the understandings of others will also be increased when those wishes are delivered through the display boards in the city.
