New sublime in the simulacra space

"Leibniz conceived the universe as composed of "monads", microscopic substances each of which lives in
its own self-enclosed inner space, with no windows onto its environs. One cannot miss the uncanny
resemblance between Leibniz's "monadology" and the emerging cyberspace community in which global harmony
and solipsism strangely coexist. That is to say, does our immersion into cyberspace not go hand in hand
with our reduction to a Leibnizean monad which, although "without windows" that would directly open up to
external reality, mirrors in itself the entire universe? More and more, we are monads with no direct windows
onto reality, interacting alone with the PC screen, encountering only the virtual simulacra, and yet
immersed more than ever into the global network, synchronously communicating with the entire globe."

Citizens of the world are spending their lives staring into the reflective surfaces of their mobile phones
and desktop computers. I think that social context determines the value of the media, tendency itself of dispaying medium have to be
thought as social message. Lev Manovich said that as a window of a Web browser comes to replace cinema and television screen, a wall in art gallery, a library and a book, all at once, the new situation manifest itself: all culture, past and present, is being filtered through a computer, with its particular human-computer interface. inputting and analyzing data, running simulations, searching the Internet, playing computer games, watching streaming video, listening to music online, trading stocks, and so on. This kinds of convergence is a Web browser employed both in the office and at home, both for work and for play.

I am exploring possibility of new abstract with new media. I combine the longing of the human soul for spiritual revealation with new social phenomenon.

My moving painting have different meanings from previous modern abstract painting. It has the Dynamic form
which is form that changes in time. It has the element of Time.
My flickering geometric forms imply various meanings of discontinuety, dromologie , supernatural and theology.The object becomes the dematerilization by the fast velocity and movement .

Regarding Abstract Expressionism as limited by accounts that have considered it in isolation from popular
culture and broader social issues,I want to reset the task of investigating this art with new media culture and social context.
In the late nineteenth, the western bourgeois ideal of a centralized and autonomous individual reflects ideology of the the abstract
expressionism. modernism painting has been recognized as a white male dominated art.
web is subversive and democratic.With the low culture of WEB which can be accessed by anybody,
I want to try new possibility of new abstract.

For me, the digital canvas is another representation tool. Browser is not only the way it looks but also
an inevitable basis of existence in the new space. If the history of fine art is against the frame of canvas,
new painting will be founded on the browser, a element of being.
In the past, inherent trait of painting reveals through the recognitions and enactments of medium.
As the tool and matarial,we have to reconsider the new medium.

My works are fuctioned both in the web and gallery context.
I am looking for an aesthetic capable of the new digital images in the postmodern period.
Its fundamental category is the sublime. my aesthetic subject is the sublime. The significance of the sublime
as an aesthetic subject of art seems to lie in its conceptual reach, or in the case of the religious sublime,
in its spiritual dimension. The sublime refers to immense ideas like space, time, death, and the divine.

There exist something that cannot be represented in the dehors. When We feel the world beyond ,
we enter the realm of the sublime.To make visible that there is something which can be conceived and
which can neither be seen nor made visible.we have the idea of the world,
but we do not have the capacity to show an example of it. The simulacra is as far removed from ‘reality’ as
it is possible to be.But this true reality exists and is there awaiting discovery by us.
This would be a desire to seek permenance in the instable and forged world.

I want to invent new kind of space. this is the hybrid space and paradoxical space. virtuality, reality, transcendence...
We shall not attempt to define what is a virtual domain or a virtual world.
In Being and Time (1927) Heidegger claims that human life is characterized by the fact that we live
within a field of given and open possibilities. To exist as a human being means having to construct our own life.
We consider more and more the virtuality of computer to be the real thing. reality becomes a possible actualization of artificiality.
To transcend means to go beyond. Maybe we discover that there is something beyond artificiality,
as there is also something-thing beyond nature or existence , not just the simple fact of being.

We actually receive vibrations from painting. these vibrations emanate from colors.
my medium is light not painting and not sclpture. I began thinking in terms of light rather than color.

light can let us experience transcendent power. light affects perception.
in the beginning , there was light, simply light. the words"let there be light" marked the begining of everything.
light is intrinsic to our physical and spiritual selves.
it gives us the power of vision. light has come to mean illumination and enlightenment, a possesion of
mind. that illumination is often spiritual in nature, applied to God as the source of devine light.

for centuries, "devine light" has streamed through stained glass into the interiors of churches.
A person who comes from the outside into the relative darkness of a cathedral is struck by the light pouring
through the colored glass. Like a Rothko painting, mystical colors and luminosity create feeling of spirituality.
I want to create an atmosphere. wordless thouht that come from looking in a fire and the ocean ...

I am in the pursuit of new sublime sentiment in the new media place.
The New visual culture has changed our visual perception and cognition.
Benjamin said that new media trains people’s perception through the simulation fitting the velocity of
the modern times. I am exploring a new sublime now found in technology with biblical event.
In my work, Eternity and transcendency in the theological event are compatible with the temporality
and existence derived from the influence of electronic media .

현대 사회는 산업 부르주아에 의해 통제되는 생산과 소비의 시대이면서, 컴퓨터, 사이버네틱, 모사 코드와 모델에 의한 사회의 조직화

가 사회의 주요원리로서 기능하는 '시뮬레이션'의 시대이다. 레브 마노비치의 언급했듯 근대주의에서는 불가능했던 속도와 에너지로

특정 문화의 개별성을 지워버리는 문화적인 세계화를 전달하는 매개체 중에서, 저렴해진 국제항공과 인터넷은 가장 중요한 요소이다.

브라우저 앱스트랙시리즈는 웹브라우저를 통한 사이버 공간에 대한 사회적 의미와 새로운 미학적 가능성의 탐색이라고 볼수 있다. 우

리는 삶의 많은 시간들을 모바일 폰이나 데스크탑 컴퓨터와 접촉하며 살아간다. 사회적 컨텍스트가 미디어의 가치를 결정하고, 미디어

자체를 드러내는 것을 사회적 메세지라고 한다면, 웹브라우져 안에서 창출, 생산, 보급, 유통, 분배되는 현대문화는 결국 우리의 인식방

식을 변화시키고, 그 안에서 새로운 삶의 의미, 가치, 취향 등을 창출하고 주고 받고 있다. 브라우저는 많은 사회적 의미를 함의하고 있

으며, 웹은 다시한번 시각의 패권화에 기여하고 있다. 웹 브라우저의 창이 영화와 텔레비전화면, 미술관의 벽, 도서관과 책을 모두 한꺼

번에 대체하면서 새로운 상황이 나타나게 된다. 모든 문화가 이 창을 통해 걸러져 나오게 된다. 데이터의 입력과 분석, 인터넷 검색, 컴

퓨터 게임, 스트리밍 비디오 보기, 온라인 음악듣기, 주식거래, 쇼핑등 일과 놀이가 이 웹브라우저를 통해 통합되었고, 일과 여가의 분

리는 이미 극복되었다.

나의 브라우져 앱스트랙 시리즈는 과거의 앱스트랙페이팅을 연상시키는것은 사실이다. 서구, 백인, 남성 중심의 미술의 모더니즘의 편

협성과, 형식주의, 대중과 의 괴리등으로 비판을 받은 과거 추상 형식을 차용한것은 새로운 문화와 사회적 컨택스트속에서 추상적 형

식에 사회적 내용을 담고 현실성을 회복시키려는 의도이다. 결국 나의 작업은 웹이라는 매체를 통한 시뮬라크라적인 사회. 문화적 상

황을 재현하려는 것이다. 나에게 디지털 캔버스는 또다른 재현의 도구이며, 모든 형식은 브라우져 안에서 성립된다. 과거의 추상미술

과는 달리 웹은 누구나 접근할 수 있는 민주적이며 전복적인 공간미며 더 이상 추상적인 공간이 아닌 구체적인 공간이다. 그리고 과거

의 내용과 형식, 컨텐츠와 미디어라는 오래된 이분법은 콘텐츠 -인터페이스의 이분법으로 다시 쓰이고 있지만, 워프에서 데리다에 이

르는 현대 사상가들이 ‘부호의 반투명성’ 개념을 주장한 것처럼, 컨텐츠와 형식은 분리될 수 없다. 미디어 자체가 메시지라는 말을 굳이

언급할 필요는 없겠지만, 컴퓨터는 과거의 매체와는 다른 방식으로 인간의 지각방식에 영향을 주며, 지각자체를 변동시키고 있다.

주체는 두 공간안에 존재하게 되는데, 한 공간은 그의 신체가 속한 익숙한 물리적 공간이고, 또 하나는 스크린 속에 있는 이미지의 가상공

간이다. 그리고 마노비치가 언급했다시피 알베르티의 창, 뒤러의 원근법적 기계, 카메라 옵스큐라, 사진, 영화에서처럼 주체는 움직일 수

없었듯이 이 공간에서는 신체는 감금된다. 나의 작품에 드러나 있는 스크롤바는 이러한 또 다른 형태의 신체의 감금을 표현한 것이라고도

볼 수 있다. 오늘날 신체는 이러한 스크린에 매달려 있으며, 스크린에 종속되어 있다. 그리고 이 실시간 스크린은 현재를 보여준다. 전통적

인 스크린은 과거의 움직이지 않는, 변하지 않는 이미지를 보여주고, 역동적인 스크린은 과거의 움직이는 이미지를 보여 준다면, 실시간 스

크린은 런타임이라 표현되듯 프로그래밍에 의해 실시간으로 현재를 보여준다. 나의 작업들도 컴퓨터 프로그래밍에 의해 실시간으로 움직

이는 이미지 이며, 과거의 동영상 이미지들은 초당 30~ 60프레임 레이트를 가지고 있지만, 나의 작업에서의 움직임은 초당 200 프레임 레

이트를 가지며 인간의 시지각의 한계를 넘어선다.

더 나아가 나의 공간은 가상성과, 실재성, 초월성이 뒤섞인 혼성적인 공간인 동시에, 역설적인 공간이다. 컴퓨터 모니터는 또다른 세계

와 연결해주는 게이트와 같은 역할을 한다. 컴퓨터를 바라보는 것은 또 다른 세계로의 진입을 가능케하는 종교적 제의와 같다. 현대인

들은 다중적인 세계를 매일 경험하고 살아간다.

라이프니츠는 세계를 모나드(monads)로 구성된 것으로 본다. 모나드란 외부환경으로 열린 창문이 없이 각기 자기 폐쇄적인 내적 공간

에서 살고 있는 현미경적 실체들이다.

라이프니츠는 그의 주저서 『모나드로지』에서 독자적인 단자론적 형이상학 사상을 주장했는데 라이프니츠는 물리적 원자론을 비판

해서, 우주를 구성하는 가장 단순한 요소, 즉 자연의 참된 아톰은 불가분하며 공간적 확산을 가지지 않는 단순자이고, <형이상학적 점>

이라고도 할 수 있는 것이라고 주장했다. 모나드는 의식적 또는 무의식적 지각을 가진 혼과 유사한 것이며, 각각 고유한 관점에서 우주

의 일체의 사상을 표출하는 개체적 실체이다. 그러나 각각의 모나드는 상호 다른 곳에서 독립적이며, 모나드는 거기에서 물체가 들어

오거나 나가는 <창>을 가지지 않았다. 또한 모나드의 작용은 자기의 내적 원리에만 의거해서 전개되고, 모나드 상호 사이에는 예정조

화의 원리에 따른 관념적 관계밖에 존재하지 않는데 라이프니츠에 의하면 우주에서 일체는 생명적 작용에 의해서 이루어지며, 물질의

어떤 미세한 부분에도 생명이 있다.

우리는 전지구적 조화와 유아론이 이상하게 공존하는 최근의 사이버공간 공동체와 라이프니츠의 모나드론 사이에 유사성을 볼 수 있

다. 사이버 공간에의 몰입은 직접 외부현실로 개방된 ‘창문없이’ 그 자체로 전체 세계를 반영하는 모나드인 것이다. 오늘날 컴퓨터 화면

앞에 홀로 앉아 웹서핑하는 사람의 전형적인 모습은 점점 더 모나드를 닮아간다고 할 수 있다. 그는 현실로 통하는 직접적 창문 없이 오

직 가상의 모사물만을 대면하면서도 전지구적 커뮤니케이션 네트워크 안에 있는 것이다. 평면의 직사각형 표면앞에서 우리의 일상적 공간,

즉 우리 몸이 속한 공간 안에 존재하면서 또 다른 공간으로 나아가는 창문이 된다.

&51 단순실체에서 하나의 모나드는 오직 신의 중재를 통해서 다른 모나드에 영향을 준다. 그래서 신의 관념 안에서 하나의 모나드는 신이 근원적인 단초에서부터 다른 하나의 모나드에게 주의를 기울일 것을 요구하는 경우에만 다른 모나드에 이상적으로 작용한다. 하나의 피조 모나드는 다른 피조 모나드의 내부에 물리적 영향을 미칠 수가 없기 때문에, 유일하게 이러한 경우에만 하나의 모나드가 다른 모나드에 의존적일 수 있을 것이다.

신이 개체들을 초월적으로 이어주듯이 인터넷이 오늘날 사람들을 이어주고 있다. 인터넷 상에서 사람들을 만날 때 상대와 나는 사실

단절된 상태이다. 모나드들이 신을 통해서만 영향을 주고 받을 수 있듯이 우리는 채팅 창이나 게시판의 글, 즉 인터넷을 통해서만 연결

된다. 또한 컴퓨터와 인터넷은 그 안에 수많은 폴더와 링크를 가질 수 있다. 이때 폴더와 링크는 무한히 많이 겹쳐져 있는 모습에서 모

나드의 주름 개념과 비슷하다.

비 물질적이며, 모나드적인 공간이 사이버스페이스는 대중의 무의식,의식에 영향을 끼치고 있는 어떤 비의적인 , 신비적인 아우라를

가지고 있다. 이것은 어떠한 초월적인 세계와 접하는 과거의 종교의식과 비슷한 면모를 가지고 있다. 나의 작품들의 제목들 (cross,

trinity, infinity, redemption..)등에서 살펴볼 수 있듯이 성경의 주제들이며, 이러한 제목들은 이러한 초월성과 실재를 연결시켜주는 기능

을 한다. 어떠한 역사 속에서 일어났던 실제 사건이며, 그리고 종교적인 주제들은 이러한 초월성을 반영한다.

나는 새로운 종류의 공간을 창조하길 원한다. 이것은 가상과 실재, 초월성이 혼재하는 혼성적이며 역설적인 공간이다. 하이데거는 존

재와 시간에서 인간의 삶은 주어진 영역안에서 개방된 가능성을 가지고 살아간다고 이야기 하고 있다. 인간으로서 존재한다는 의미는

우리의 삶을 구성해 나간다는 것이다. 우리는 점점 컴퓨터안에서의 가상성을 실재로 인식하며 살아가고 있다. 이것들은 실재가 아니면

서 비실재로 치부할 수도 없다. 형이상학적 이분법의 구도에서 가상 현실의 가상성은 규정 불가능하다. 사이버 공간이 단순히 환영이

나 비현실이 아니라, 오히려 물리적 현실의 한계를 넘어서 보다 실재적이라고도 볼 수 있는 '관념적 의식'의 세계를 감각화시켜 실제 경

험의 세계로 안내해 주고 있기 때문이다. 물리적 현실을 실재개념의 기준으로 설정하면, 그 외의 모든 현실은 가상적 현실이 된다. 그러

나 인간은 물리적 현실과 그 안에서의 경험에 대하여 사색하고, 표현하고, 전달하는 가운데 그것들을 실재의 현실보다 더 현실적인 것

으로 그려낼 뿐만 아니라, 비현실적인 것들까지 상상하여 표현하는 능력을 가지고 있다. 만화, 소설, 시, 연극, 영화 등의 세계는 그것이

현실을 기반으로 했다고 하더라도 현실이 아닌 이상 가상적 현실이다. 라이프니츠의 가능 세계론은 현대 기술과 연결할 때 가상 현

실(virtual reality)과 연관된다. 라이프니츠에 따르면 빈위들이 현실화되지 않은 채 완전 개념에 들어있는 경우를 잠재성이라 한다. 그것

은 실제화되지 않은 현실이다. 신의 지성 속에서는 다양한 세계가 존재할 수 있었으나 신은 충분한 이유로 현 세계를 택했다. 이 때 선

택되지 못한, 가능성으로서만 존재하는 나머지 다양한 세계들을 가능세계라 한다.

나는 새로운 미디어의 장소에서 새로운 숭고한 감정을 추구한다. 성경적 사건들과 새로운 기술을 결합시킨 현대적 숭고함을 모색하고

있다. 새로운 시각 문화는 우리의 시각적 인식과 지각을 변경시켰다. 벤야민은 새로운 미디어의 속도는 사람들의 인식을 훈련했다. 우

리와 자연 현상의 사이에 기계라고 하는 하나의 표상도구가 위치하게 되고 그 도구가 제시하는 것을 우리는 그대로 인지하게 되며 이

는 지각하는 행위 자체의 변화를 의미하게 된다. 20세기 초에 영화라는 매체를 통해 환영화, 시각화, 움직임, 가속화, 리듬화 등 오늘날

대중에게 이미 친밀한 이러한 표현의 구조화된 현상들은 발전되었다. 최근의 신경학자들에 의해 밝혀진 결과를 통해 우리의 지각 방식

이 원근법처럼 계산되고 논리적인 방식이 더 이상 아니라 몽타주의 과정이라는 사실을 주목케 한다. 하지만 새로운 매체인 인터넷은

좀 더 신체와의 접촉을 통한 상호작용적이고, 하이퍼텍스트적이며, 멀티태스킹적 지각을 갖게 한다. 메를로 퐁티의 견해처럼 단지 눈

을 통해 보는 것이 아닌 몸 전체로 보는 육화된 지각, 주체가 테크놀로지와 함께 존재할 수 있는, 보다 고도화된 육체의 지각능력이다.

결국 나의 작품은 시각적인 현상이 아닌 육체적으로 경험될 수 있는 영역의 것이다.
